Home Run! A review of Varsity Rulebreaker by Ginger Scott

Varsity Rulebreaker

Book 3 in The Varsity Series by Ginger Scott

Hollis Taylor is allowed to break the rules. She’s coach’s little girl. And she’s good. If that means she gets to bump one of the guys for the starting catcher’s job on the Public High baseball team, then the others on the squad better suck it up and deal.

But breaking rules has taken Cannon Jennings far in life. One of the nation’s top pitching prospects, he came here to throw to his cousin and show college recruiters everything he could do on the mound. Taking his signs from a girl was not part of his blueprint, especially one that screwed over his favorite relative and best friend.

Too bad he broke the biggest rule of all before he knew exactly who she was.

It was just a New Year’s kiss. Totally forgettable. Especially under the circumstances.

So why can’t he stop thinking about it?

I have loved every book in this series and Varsity Rulebreaker is no exception. This is the story of Cannon and Hollis. We briefly met Cannon earlier in this series as the new boy in town, joining his cousin Zack for their senior year of baseball. Hollis is the new Coach's daughter, and she's the only female trying out for the baseball team, vying for Zack's position of catcher. There is an immediate chemistry between Cannon and Hollis from their very first meeting, but Cannon quickly finds himself in the middle of rising tensions between Zack and Hollis that could ruin everything. I loved both Hollis and Cannon. Hollis is one strong young woman who is not afraid to fight for what she loves, and although Cannon was torn between his family loyalty and his growing feelings for Hollis, I love how he was finally able to fight for what he knew in his heart to be right. This is a well written YA sports romance that touches on some real life topics. I was angry, I was emotional, and yet I smiled so many times while reading this story. It was great to see the characters from the other books back in this final installment, and I especially appreciated one final glimpse into all of their lives. I'm sad to see this series come to an end. Highly recommended story and series.
